Dia de los Reyes (Three Kings Day)

My host family invited me to a special party last night at a friends' house. January 6th was Dia de los Reyes, a holiday where people commemorate the wise men bringing gifts to young Jesus. This picture is the Rosca, a special cake that has one or several plastic figures of a baby Jesus. Each person takes turns cutting the cake. If you cut into one of figures, then you have to host and make tamales for the Feb 2nd Candlemas holiday (marks the end of winter). I did not cut into one of the figures, which is a good thing as my tamale making making skills are a bit rusty.

Where is a great place to buy your Rosca cake? At Walmart of course.

Everyone watching me with anticipation as I make the opening cut. The girl on the left plays tennis at Appalachian State Univ.

You can see in the middle piece an example of cutting into the baby figurine.

The group (minus Frank) from the evening.

Its a bit dark, but you can see an example video or the cutting of the Rosca.
